Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. I can’t wait for the apples to ripen and the leaves to change color. Living in an area known for its apple orchards, I have a few favorite apple recipes. This simple and easy-to-make apple crisp recipe is the perfect seasonal treat. The best part? You probably already have all of the ingredients at home!
Dennis and my dad share the same birthday, and my brother’s is four days later. We recently had everyone over for a birthday dinner. Instead of cake, we topped off our meal with apple crisp. One pan was the perfect amount for the six of us adults, although I did force Rory to finish up the last little bit so I didn’t have to save it. There may be a little of my grandmother in me after all!
We had visited our local apple festival the day before the birthday dinner, and baby Josh and I shared a small plate of apple crisp from the Hartford Methodist Church booth. It was so good! When I was deciding what to make for the dinner, I remembered how the warm baked apples and the crunchy sweet topping had tasted the day before, and I decided to bake an amazing apple crisp of my own for dessert. It was the perfect choice!
We had great fun with the babies at our local apple festival. To read about our trip to the Hartford Apple Festival with the grandbabies, click here.
Apple Crisp
This easy apple crisp recipe is perfect for fall!
Ingredients
- 6 medium apples
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp water
- 3/4 cup brown sugar firmly packed
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup oatmeal
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 cup butter softened
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
Choose firm, crisp apple varieties, such as Cortland, MacIntosh, or Honey Crisp. I prefer Cortland or Winesap.
-
Peel and core apples. While you can use a a sharp paring knife, it is much quicker with an all-in-one apple peeler-corer.
-
Place apples in an 8 x 8 or 9 x 9 pan and sprinkle with the lemon juice and water.
-
Mix dry ingredients (brown sugar, flour, oatmeal, and cinnamon together in a small bowl. Add softened butter, mixing until the ingredients are crumbly.
-
Sprinkle mixture over apples.
-
Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. The apples should be tender when done.
-
Enjoy!
For even more deliciousness, pair the warm apple crisp with vanilla ice cream.
