Clap When You Land: A Teacher’s Review

During the summer I’m always on the lookout for new books to add to my classroom library. This year, one of the ones I decided to purchase was Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. I hadn’t read much about the book, but someone recommended it on a Facebook teachers group I follow saying it was  a great book with diverse protagonists.  As I’m always looking to expand my students’ horizons and to create empathy for all types of people, I thought it would be worth buying.

My July Reading List

It’s the end of July, and school is starting soon. Where did summer go? I didn’t get most of the things done this summer that I had planned to do, but, all in all, it’s been a good summer. I definitely do not have as many books on my July reading list as I normally do. I’m just going to blame that on babies and puppies! However, I was able to read 14 books this month.  Here is my July reading list.

My June Reading List

Are you ready for my June reading list? It’s now halfway though the year, and I’ve managed to keep track of every book I’ve finished so far this year. I’m actually pretty impressed–I’ve never been able to do that before.  June is my time for relaxation and rejuvenation after a long, hard school year. It’s always a great time to read. This month was a little busier than normal (more about that in a bit), but I still was able to add 15 books to my June reading list.

How it all began

I started the month in Denver, awaiting the arrival of our fifth grandchild. Dennis and I drove out together, but he had to fly home on May 28.  Little Oz was born on June 3. While in Denver, I read, played lots of board games with J.R., and blogged. Meghan hogged Oz, so I didn’t get quite enough cuddles to last until I see him again. I left Denver on the 10th, stopping in Kansas and Missouri, before arriving home on the 13th. Along the way, I visited the Moon Marble Company in Bonner Springs, Kansas.
Waiting for baby Oz to arrive gave me lots of time to add books to my June reading list.
Baby Oz, one week old. At 10 lbs, 4 oz., Oz was a big, fat baby (according to older brother J.R.).

And how it ended

Remember how June was supposed to be quiet and relaxing? It really wasn’t.
I got home on Thursday and packed for a weekend camping trip. On Friday, at the campground, the kids surprised me with my belated 50th birthday present: a new puppy named Pennsylvania. And somehow, that little puppy took over my life. I really didn’t get much done the last two weeks of the month. I definitely didn’t read as much as I had at the beginning of June.
Anyhow, here is my June reading list!

Reading Roundup: May 2019

May signals the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation here at the home of the Cleland Clan.  It’s a busy month–we’re out in the yard, planting flowers, finishing up projects and grades at school, and so much more. Luckily I was able to squeeze in a little reading time this month, mostly in the evenings before I went to bed. Dennis has been traveling for work–he’s on a big library move out at the University of Missouri, so it’s just me and the dog at home, leaving me time to read 15 books this month.  So, without further ado, here’s my May reading list!

Reading Roundup: April 2019 — 8 Books to Read

April was a really busy month for our family.  I actually didn’t teach a single Friday this month due to field trips and Good Friday. I spent the first Friday of the month in Washington, DC, viewing the gorgeous cherry blossoms along with the 80 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students I was chaperoning. On the second Friday, I attended the Youngstown State University English Festival along with several junior high students. The third Friday was Good Friday, and our school was on break for Easter leaving us time for fun as a family. Then, the last Friday was our annual eighth grade field trip to Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania. You’d think that would leave me a lot of time to read; however with several evenings spent working the finish line at track meets, I actually had less time to read this month than in March. Even so, there were several books on my April reading list that I’d love to share with you.

Reading Roundup: March 2019

March was a great month for reading here in Northeastern Ohio. It’s cold and either snowy or muddy, so there’s not much to do outside. In my world, that translates to more reading time. This month, I was able to finish seventeen books. Find out more about my March reading list titles below.

Reading Roundup: February 2019

February is a wonderful month for reading. It’s still winter which means it’s a great time to curl up on the sofa with a cup of steaming hot cocoa, a warm, fluffy blanket, and a great book.  This month, I was able to take advantage of my time indoors with several great books.

Reading Roundup: January 2019

One of my New Year’s resolutions for 2019 was to keep a list of the books I’ve read. I read a lot, but I’ve never managed to keep up with a list. This year I decided to write down the books I finish in my calendar and share them with you. So far, it’s working well. Without further ado, here is my January reading list.
