8 Fun Puppy Products You’ll Want for Your New Dog

Sharing is caring!

Our new chocolate lab Penny has been a wonderful addition to our family. However, like many puppies, she’s easily bored and wants to play or chew most of the time–actually any time that she’s not sleeping. The other day I took her shopping to chose a few new toys–eight fun products that you’ll want for your new puppy too.

Fun Products You’ll Want for Your New Puppy: Penny’s Picks

Penny’s picks for fun puppy products come from three categories: chewing, playtime, and safety. Take a look and see what you think.

For Chewing

Nylabone Combo Pack

Penny loves to chew. This Nylabone puppy combo pack is perfect for her. It comes with two bones and is for dogs who are under 35 pounds. Penny loves the chicken flavor. These Nylabone pack is designed especially for teething puppies–the bones are softer than the regular Nylabones.  Penny especially likes the wolf ring–I think it’s easier for her to hold. As she chews, the long ridges and round nubs help massage her gums.

Kong Classic

The Kong Classic dog toy is another great pick. It’s made of durable natural rubber and is virtually indestructible. When I fill it with peanut butter (do NOT use the low sugar variety), Penny will play with it, chewing and licking for up to an hour.  You can buy Kong treats or Ziggies to insert or their edible Stuffin spray, but a spoon and some all-natural peanut butter do the trick.  Kongs come in many different sizes and strengths. I chose the medium (15-35 lbs) over the puppy one because I knew Penny would outgrow the puppy one quickly.

Nylabone Antler Alternative

Another chew toy that  Penny owns is the Nylabone Antler Alternative. It’s softer than regular deer antlers and designed specifically for puppies. The chicken flavor permeates the entire chew instead of just being on the outside, which tempts Penny to keep chewing. I’d much rather have Penny chew on her Nylabones instead of chewing my furniture, walls, and shoes like our old dog Indy did.

For Playtime

Kong Squeezz Ball

Penny is a retriever. Since day one, she has always loved chasing objects. This Kong Squeez Ball is the BEST!  I squeeze her purple ball once or twice to get her attention, and then throw it. Penny chases it and brings it back. It bounces well on the concrete of our patio before going into the grass. If I want to occupy Penny for a small amount of time, I can put a Kong Ziggy through the hole. She’ll chew on it until she can’t chew anymore, manipulating the ball with her mouth and her paws. Today, Penny even squeezed her little body under the love seat after the ball disappeared underneath. I really wish I’d bought more than one of these.

Penny squeezed her entire body under the love seat to retrieve her lost ball. I’m not sure how she managed to do it, but I’m super impressed that she made her way back out again with the ball.

Kong Elephant

Another toy that Penny loves is her bright pink Kong elephant. Kong is known for durability, and the elephant is no exception. Penny loves cuddling with her elephant and making it squeak.

Top Paw Round Squeak Owl

Penny loves to hide under the coffee table. Here she is with her stuffed owl.

I admit that I bought this owl toy for Penny just because it was cute. That being said, Penny absolutely adores it. The entire body is one large squeaker so she can easily work it. This product is made specifically for puppies and  has rubber feet that Penny loves to chew on. It’s one of the cutest fun puppy products I’ve ever seen!

Flattie Fox

Another one of Penny’s favorites is her stuffing-less plush fox. The fox is 14 inches long and similar to this one.  There is a squeaker in the head, and the body has a crinkling sound that Penny loves.  I love that when she eventually rips it apart (as Indy used to), there won’t be stuffing all over the house. They do make larger ones, but the smaller size was perfect for our baby.  The one we have is the smallTop Paw Realistic Plush Flattie Fox.  Similar toys come in a variety of animals; however, I do not suggest buying the skunk. You definitely do not want to teach your puppy that skunks make good playmates!

For Safety

The SpotLit Clip-on LED Light

This isn’t a fun toy for Penny to play with, but I love it. It’s a fact of life that small dogs need to go out several times each day. Penny is dark brown, and she’s hard to see at night. Therefore I picked up a SpotLit Clip-on LED light to make her more visible while we’re out.  The light has a carabiner to easier clip onto your pet’s color. If you press it once, it will shine. Press it twice, and it will flash. This water-resistant light comes in several different colors, Penny’s is pink to match her collar.  It ‘s light-weight, and she doesn’t seem to notice that it’s there. Penny’s SpotLit takes batteries and will last up to 20 hours before the batteries need to be replaced.

Conclusion about these 8 fun puppy products

I admit that Penny is probably a little spoiled. But, life is short, and even shorter when you’re a dog. These products will keep your little one active and entertained for hours. And, because of that, they are worth their weight in gold!

Penny says “Hope to see you again soon!”

  1. What a great selection of toys! I have a 3 years old westie but he still loves playing outside. The kong classic seems ideal for him. I loved the kong elephant but I’m afraid it wouldn’t survive a week haha

  2. These pup products are wonderful! Not only ‘new’ dogs but also ‘old’ dogs would appreciate such gifts.

  3. I can’t get a puppy in our in-law apartment because our housemates have a baby and my boyfriend and I unfortunately work too much to handle looking after our own puppy just yet. Maybe one day! I’ll definitely pass these products along to my friends with fur babies of their own

  4. I don’t have a fur baby but if I did I would get him everything on this list. Everything is so cute! Especially the bright Kong elephant! I love that!

  5. My “puppy” is almost one year old, but I know she’d love some of these. I’d never heard of the nylabone antlers, will definitely have to check those out, and I know she would LOVE the Kong elephant. Her birthday is just over a week away, and the kids are determined to have a birthday celebration for her. I plan on making some puppy cupcakes and will have to pick a couple of these up!

  6. My pups always loved the Kong Classics too. They are awesome toys and bounce great for fetching.

  7. My best friend has got a new pup. The other day she was asking me what toys she should get for her new pup. I had no clue! For now he plays with a soft toy. I will suggest her to get the kong squeeze ball! 🙂

  8. This is a really helpful post! I have a puppy as well who literally does nothing that it worries me lol. Will try some of these!

  9. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who has purchased a toy just based on the fact it was cute. Lol. I’m forwarding this to a friend who has a brand new puppy. Right now all I have is my cat, and he has decided he needs to steal my paracord that I’m making bracelets out of. So he now has his own strand of paracord to play with.

  10. Your puppy is absolutely adorable. Those eyes. My husband and I often house-sit. We find dogs love those Kongs and can keep them occupied for a while. I’ll check out some of the other suggestions too. Than you.

  11. She looks so happy. I find it even more amazing that someone or a group of people came together to come up with these items. Penny and the entire dog race would be eternally grateful.

  12. She looks so happy and thoroughly deserves spoiling. I want a puppy cuddle!

Those Nylabones are great. It was the only thing our old dog could have when he was a pup. He tried to eat every other toy he had, meaning we couldn’t leave him alone with anything else until he was about two years old.

  13. We have literally used every single one of these puppy toys in the past. Nylabones are the best. I was told to never use rawhide bones or anything with rope in it. My nieces pit bull had rope twisted in her intestines and required surgery. I still have Kongs around my house that the dogs play with. We used to stuff it with the KONG treats as well for hours of fun. And Flattie fox. We called it Flat Fox or roadkill in our house and the squeaker never made it a day but you’re right. With all other toys the stuffing winds up all over the house. Great tips for toys for puppies. Buy them all you and your puppy will not regret it!
